Tyrone Roper owns the the D&F bar, (named after his parents Donald and Francis) one of the juke joints on Mosquito Beach in the Sol Legare community on James Island. The "beach" is a quarter-mile strip of marshland and mud, but back when segregation was still in effect, it was one of the few waterfront areas that welcomed African Americans. There was not much swimming to be had but they danced, drank and ate in the restaurants and juke joints.
