The silhouette of Ernest Parks is reflected in the glass of a display case depicting the Battle of Battery Wagner in the Seashore Farmers Lodge in the Gullah community of Sol Legare on James Island. Parks is the curator of the lodge which has been a centerpiece of the community for decades. The Battle of Battery Wagner, fought during the American Civil War, involved an assault by the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry which was one of the first official African American units in the United States during the Civil War.
