A vacant sweetgrass basket stand sits vacant during a rainy day along U.S. Highway 17 in Mt. Pleasant, SC. The roadside stands are the most visible aspect of the Gullah Geechee culture along U.S. Highway 17. In 2006 a portion of the highway was designated as the Sweetgrass Basket Makers Highway. That same year the sweetgrass baskets became South Carolina’s official state craft.
