Ernest Parks, curator of the Seashore Farmers' Lodge, wears his uniform of the 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, which was one of the first sanctioned African-American regiments in the Union Army. The 54th fought the Battle of Sol Legare on the island in 1863, two days before they engaged in the Battery Wagner battle famously depicted in the film Glory.
